AVID
AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID at the secondary level is:
- An elective class that uses an established curriculum made up of rigorous standards, WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies, Cornell note-taking, study skills, tutorials led by trained college tutors, and Socratic Seminars
- A structured, college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts
- A direct support structure for first-generation college students, grades 7-12
- A school-wide approach to curriculum and rigor adopted by nearly 4,000 schools in 45 states and 15 countries
- A professional development program providing training around the world
AVID Curriculum
The AVID class meets daily and uses an established curriculum. It includes:
- Rigorous standards
- WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading) strategies
- Cornell note-taking
- Study skills
- Tutorials led by trained college tutors on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Socratic Seminars
- The creation of a network of support made up of parents, teachers, and AVID classmates all focused on the goal of preparing students for college
